MONTHLY DEVOTIONALS
Mary, the mother of Jesus is well known and highly regarded. She is spoken about a lot during the Christmas season. However, we would all do well to follow her godly example throughout the New Year, for Mary had a special heart for God Read more...
I awoke with a start early one morning as a vehicle license plate flashed before my eyes. It bore the initials R EV 2 4. I grabbed my Bible and anxiously turned to Revelation chapter two, verses two through four. My heart began to sink as I read verse four, "I have this against you, that you have left your first love." Our lives as Christians can be compared to a kite. Sometimes we glide high in the sky on a smooth course, feeling full of faith in God. Other times we experience a great deal of turbulence that tatters and tears at our faith. Our surrounding circumstances can create an atmosphere of hopelessness that jolts us crashing down into a sea of despair. Read More
Springtime is such a beautiful time around Charis Cottage! The daffodils are in full bloom encircled about our pecan tree, and the plum tree is graced with delicate, fragrant blossoms. I could stay outside all day, but reality sets in as I am reminded that our house is in desperate need of a thorough housecleaning. I must definitely get serious about cleaning my closets! I am quite the "clutter bug", but God has been so gently showing me that these "treasures on earth" rob my time and cause me strife as I continually shuffle items. Read More...
With a warm embrace and a quick kiss, my husband, Guy, and I shared good-byes, one Saturday evening, as he hurried out the door to work the night shift at a local water filtration plant. I did some necessary housework, then wearily fell into bed totally unprepared for the drama in the night. At approximately 3 o'clock Sunday morning, I was abruptly awaken by the smell of smoke! Quietly, reverently I enter the throne room. The King slowly turns His eyes toward me. I humbly bow before Him. A welcoming smile spreads across His face. He sweetly calls my name as He extends His loving hands beckoning me to come closer. Read More...
The busy summer day seemed endless. Nothing seemed to go right that day. I was getting more and more irritable by the minute. Suddenly, I lost my temper and lashed out at my two sons. Then I began to cry in shame and despair. In the midst of my outburst, my five-year-old son, Jeremy proceeded to share with me about some car wash game. As I sat on the floor overwhelmed and angry, Read More...
One soul-searching day as I was reading my Bible, my eyes fell on Zephaniah chapter three verse one which reads, "Woe to her who is rebellious…" His warning got my attention. God was talking about the wickedness of Jerusalem, but the verses were leaping off the pages and penetrating my heart. Read More...
6) He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7) And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead,…
A cool and pleasant breeze is sweeping over the land. Sitting on our porch swing, I gaze at colorful leaves on the trees waving and singing songs to their Maker, while others dance about in the air. One day the trees will be made bare, proclaiming fall is here! I am reminded that our Lord changes the times and seasons of the year God also changes the seasons of our hearts. Read More...
5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
When my husband Guy and I were newlyweds, I did not look forward to the Christmas season, for we had no money to spend on gifts. My sickness and hospital stay earlier in the year had left us plagued with enormous medical bills that we were struggling to pay off. We were so broke that we could not even afford a Christmas tree to decorate. The joyful Christmas carols and dazzling holiday lights around our community were painful reminders of our lack, and that caused me to feel quite anxious. Read More...
